Astronomy Today Facts

Astronomy today is a popular and enjoyable hobby as well as a vital science making new discoveries every day. With old and new discoveries, space missions, current events, videos and photos, astronomy is a hobby that can fill countless hours. And it's fun. So here are a few of the latest and greatest astronomy facts, figures and happenings.

On any day meteors are a key element of astronomy today for that day. As 2008 came to an end meteors certainly were in the news. In November the Taurids and Leonids were active in the night sky. Gemenids peaked in December, but unfortunately it was also the time of a full moon making them impossible to see. No need to worry. Meteor showers can continue for as long as four weeks. People won't miss these showers.

A moon return was often discussed for astronomy today in the year 2008. This mission would be undertaken cooperatively by the entire world. It may even result in a moon colony. Think of it. The old science-fiction show Space 1999 may soon come to life.

Astronomy today in 2008 often included worries over falling space debris in the form of a discarded ammonia tank. After being thrown into orbit, it was finally about to plummet back to the planet. Some people were concerned that pieces might fall into populated areas. But thankfully that didn't happen.

Hubble was probably the biggest news in astronomy today in 2008. First the telescope was damaged when some instrument control and data formatting modules failed in September. Those were brought back on line in October. Hubble then took the first visible light images of a planet orbiting another star. Talk about a hard year's work.

Astrology today isn't hard to follow. The Internet is a great source for this information.
